Who gets the spoon?

wooden-spoon

The Wanderers have won the Premiership, so the Mariners have officially finished in second place on the ladder. Heart still has something to play for; they must avoid the humiliation of finishing bottom of the table. By the end of this weekend the wooden spoon will either belong to Melbourne or travel across the ditch to Wellington.

I wasn’t sure if Heart had what it took to make back-to-back finals, but never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be in this position. I actually predicted WSW and the Jets to be fighting for bottom after their poor preseasons. Heart have lost so many players and turned over key coaching staff since last season and those loses have proved too much to cover. No away win for the entire season has also been disastrous. Our away form is certainly making me think twice about planning away trips so far ahead of time.

Simon Colosimo, Patrick Gerhardt, Ben Garuccio, and Nick Kalmar are available for Heart’s final game of the year. Unfortunately Jonatan Germano is still injured. The Mariners have lots of experience to add to their side in Matt Ryan, Pedj Bojic, Adriano Pellegrino, Michael Mcglinchey, Brad Mcdonald, and Anthony Caceres. However, with this game now being a dead rubber from a Mariners’ perspective, the mail is that Graham Arnold will use this as an opportunity to play his youth squad. The Central Coast have finals and ACL games ahead of them so it makes sense.

In what’s been a disappointing season for Heart, I fear another away loss is on the cards. I’ve been so positive all season but after observing the lack of fight from the Suncorp Stadium away bay last week I’m tipping against us for the first time. If the players have any sense of pride and professionalism left they will prove me wrong. Please prove me wrong. Every match has something to play for. They can play for their contracts. Play to avoid the spoon. Play for the jumper. Play for us the fans. Come on Heart!

Prediction: CCM 2 – Heart 1

Late update: Congratulations to Superhero keeper Clint Bolton who is a surprise inclusion for Redmayne! He’s had a fine career and it’s only fitting he has been given a farewell!

So it’ll only have taken 3 seasons for our team to win something. It’s been a shocking season, the Heart ‘brand’ has been well and truly trashed.
