Win over Hume opens Highway to Finals for South Melbourne

Nick Nteris looks at the mid-season Resurgence at the Lakeside Stadium

Sunday the 11th of August at the Lakeside Stadium saw the 4th place Hume City taking on the 8th placed home side South Melbourne. In recent weeks the VPL footballing public had noticed a somewhat resurgence of South Melbourne under Chris Taylor, this is believed to be due to the signings brought in at mid season they follow, Nick Epifano, Iqi Jawadi, Timothy Mala, Bryan Bran, Luke Hopper from his former club Dandenong Thunder, Jonathan Munoz – Rotenburger SV, Nick Soolsma – SBV Excelsior &Christopher Maynard – Western Suburbs SC

After a quite start to the match South Melbourne started the high scoring affair in the 34th minute through Trent Rixon, and just before the main break South doubled their advantage through the inform man Trent Rixon and they went into the break against the 4th placed Hume City up 2-0 at the Lakside. In the second half the game was quickly put to bed through Luke Hooper in the 65 th minute. The game was mostly one sided but Hume City did manage to get a consolidation goal through Atilla Ofli in the 78th minute. The game was a one sided affair which finished 6-1 and the 2nd match in many weeks where Chris Taylor and his men have comprehensively defeated a side.

Despite what many critics of the club believed was a slow start under the highly experienced Chris Taylor, South Melbourne’s season has begun heading in the right direction. Many of the home supporters had noticed in recent weeks that striker Trent Rixon is one of many reasons that the teams form is in the incline and he’s somewhat playing to his full potential which saw him do so well at Northcote City. The gaffer at the helm of South Melbourne FC Chris Taylor has got a system in place where the players are aware of how they should be playing, and where Trent Rixon is playing as a proper ‘number 9’. Could this be the right man to lead South Melbourne FC back to the glory days of the NSL?

In the final five rounds of the Victorian Premier League season South Melbourne FC finishes the season with clashes against Oakleigh, Pascoe Vale, Melbourne Knights, Northcote & they end the season the away in the final match-day Derby against Port Melbourne. Now currently sitting 8th after 17 rounds are South Melbourne FC a sniff of making the finals with 5 matches left, but by having Chris Taylor at the helm this can only strengthen their chances of qualifying.
