Melbourne City – Some possible Australian targets.

After culling nine of the unsuccessful Heart squad who should they target in season 2014/15.  With the local marquee position vacated this presents an opportunity for John Van’t Schip to inject some former Socceroos players into the fold and attempt to gain both a highly competitive squad and some extra exposure.  Sure some of these targets may be unrealistic but I’m sure more than one or two of you have thought about bringing them into your squad whilst burning the midnight candle playing football manager.

1 – Mark Bresciano

My number one target would be local boy Mark Bresciano.  After his suspension over a contract dispute ‘Bresc’ will play an important role in our world cup campaign and will hopefully be one of our shining lights.  Whilst I am unsure he wants to come home at this stage of his career we know he is not adverse to earning the petrodollars, something our new owners could wrangle if he was to become our Australian marquee.  Bresc would add an attacking flavour to the team and solve our dead ball problem we have had for a number of seasons.  The veteran of 73 Socceroos appearances would be a natural fit to launch Melbourne City onto the A-League stage.

2 – Sasa Ognenovski

Currently playing in the league on a short stint in Sydney Ognenovski has already expressed an interest to return home to Melbourne in what could be the final stages of his career.  Sasa would be the perfect fit for the club and would bring not only experience to the defence but some toughness and character.  Strikers are already finding out how tough it is to play against one of the league’s best defenders for ninety minutes.  If Kewell was to go during the off season Ognenovski would make the perfect leader of the club and would bring a wealth of knowledge to the club.  Like Bresc, Ognenovski has trained with the club to keep fit for national duties, let’s bring Bresc and Ognenovski home.

3 – Scott McDonald

Currently locked in a relegation battle with Millwall in the English Championship McDonald has only scored three times in 23 appearances for his new club.  The 30 year old might consider a return home to Melbourne if things don’t fall into place in England.  Having made a name for himself at both Celtic and Middlesbrough McDonalds best days could be behind him, but then again he could be the perfect fit for an A-League club looking for a decent striker.

4 – Aaron Mooy

There is already speculation that Mooy has signed for the club as the Australian marquee but nothing official has been stated by either Melbourne Heart or Western Sydney Wanderers.  I suspect if this is the case the announcement will be made at the conclusion of the Wanderers 2013/14 campaign.  Mooy would be a good fit for the club and work well along Murdocca and Germano.  Personally I don’t think he has shown the A-League was he is capable of, but next year might just be his year.

5 – Archie Thompson

One from left field, it’s no secret that Archie is a much loved part of rivals Victory, but he is out of contract at the end of the season and Brisbane striker Besart Berisha is on his way to the club.  Thompson can no longer expect to maintain his marquee status but is still one of the league’s best poachers, just ask any opposition defender.  This would be the most unlikely of signings but what harm could a friendly offer do.  At the very least it could take the Heart/Victory rivalry to an entire new level.
