NPLNSW Round 5 Review

An upset loss for Blacktown City has seen cross-town rivals Blacktown Spartans take advantage, maintaining their 100% win record and opening up a five point lead at the top of the table.

APIA Leichhardt 2:2 Sutherland Sharks
Sutherland blew a two goal lead to allow APIA back in the game and claim a point.

Panny Nikas opened the scoring for the Sharks. Jamie McMaster then doubled the lead and the game was only 12 minutes old.

Matthew Mayora scored a double for APIA, while APIA goalkeeper Andrew Bazi produced a heroic performance to ensure APIA a share of the points.

Blacktown Spartans 1:0 Sydney United 58
The Spartans made it 5 wins in as many games. A Kingsley Williams goal was enough to seal the 3 points.

With other results going their way, the Spartans have now opened up a five point lead at the top of the ladder.

Marconi Stallions 1:2 Sydney Olympic
No Kygriakos? No worries. Sydney Olympic got the win here after being pegged back by Marconi.

Olympic opened the scoring through Evan Kostopoulos. But Marconi equalised through Jared Lum, who converted a penalty.

Substitute Go Shirai got the winner for Olympic.

Manly United 3:1 Blacktown City
Under new coach Paul Dee, Manly backed up last week’s win with another over their more fancied opponents, Blacktown City.

It only took four minutes for Manly to hit the lead, scoring through Domenic Ferguson. However, they weren’t able to capitalise as Graeme Forbes conceded a penalty. This allowed City’s Kearyn Baccus to convert from the spot and level the score.

Chris Payne put Manly back in front with a goal just before half time. Brendan Cholokian made sure of the points for Manly, scoring their third late in the game.

St George 1:4 Rockdale City Suns
NPL new boys St George were easily thumped by Rockdale.

Nick Taneski scored early in the game for Rockdale and Sean Symons doubled their lead midway through the first half.

Taneski bagged another goal in the second half, putting Rockdale up 3:0.  St George’s David Dascal scored a consolation goal for his side late in the game, but Rockdale added a fourth through Daniel Barac in stoppage time.

South Coast Wolves 0:1 Bonnyrigg White Eagles
Bonnyrigg battered a Wolves side that had their goalkeeper, Daniel Collison, to thank for keeping the score respectable.

The White Eagles secured only their second win of the season with a goal from Mitchell Long.
