Fan of the Week – Pablo Bateson
Who is your A-League Team?
Western Sydney Wanderers
What other football teams do you support?
Socceroos and FC Barcelona
First Football memory?
Learning to be two footed at age 6 in our family’s backyard, coached by my father.
Favourite Football memory?
Being at Tashkent in September 2008 to see Socceroos beat Uzbekistan in World Cup qualifier. It was the most intense and exciting atmosphere for any away game I’ve been at.
Best/Worst A-League moment?
The Wanderers securing the Premiers Plate in 2013 at Newcastle, and same season losing the Grand Final.
What A-League club do you enjoy beating most?
Brisbane, as they are the benchmark team.
If you could recruit one A-League player from another club who would it be?
Tim Cahill.
If you could make ONE change to the A-League what would it be?
Get FFA, HAL and all clubs to engage properly with active fans group to find compromise and common ground on some big unresolved issues – I’m happy to offer my services to help facilitate!
Where would you locate the 11th A-League team and why?
Got to be our nation’s capital, and so Canberra.
How do you rate the recent performance of the Socceroos?
Good in attack for first two games, naive defensively overall and yet many positives for the future including Asian Cup and our next World Cup qualification pathway.
Who would you choose to play the Socceroos and where would you play the match? Colombia at the ANZ Stadium, as long as James Rodriguez is playing.
Where will the Socceroos be ranked in four years time?
Around 32.
Favourite Current player and why?
Australian; its Matthew Spiranovic as he’s so technically accomplished for a central defender and confident on the ball. Globally, it has to be Lionel Messi as excites in any game he plays.
Favourite player of all time?
Australian it’s Tim Cahill and globally Lionel Messi.
What single most important initiative could be put in place to improve our game in Australia?
Much bigger resources and professional support to roll out the national curriculum through all States and Territories Associations into the regions and right down to local districts and clubs, including remote communities. We need to break down the cultural resistance to the national blueprint so we develop footballers who consistently deliver international tournament success including one day the senior men’s World Cup. Pursue the vision for excellence!
Your ALL TIME XI (with a catch) you must have seen them play live.
