The Weekly Wanderer: Four From Four?

The Wellington Phoenix visit Pirtek Stadium to face the Wanderers in what is sure to be an entertaining clash.

Following on from a 1-0 home victory over the Glory some three weeks ago, and after two away visits in succession, this weekend the Wanderers return home to face an in-form Wellington outfit looking to build on recent results.

It seems things are finally beginning to click for Tony Popovic and co. After a somewhat controversial match against the Jets thankfully and deservedly swung in the Wanderers’ favour, calling last week’s trip to Melbourne City dominant would be an understatement. For the first time in a very long time there was consistency. For the first time in a very long time there was potency. If there was one thing missing in that 3-0 victory over City, I couldn’t find it.

Now, with three wins coming from their last three games, the Wanderers are within touching distance of the top two. Standing in their way of a fourth however, is a Phoenix side high in confidence after last weekend’s 4-2 victory over Adelaide in front of 13,654 home fans. You watching FFA? We need the Nix in more ways than you can “justify” against them.

As a result, this Saturday afternoon’s top-six match-up between both sides is sure to be an end-to-end bout with both sides aiming for all three points. As far as team news goes, while the Wanderers will welcome back Alberto Aguilar from injury, the Phoenix will be all the more strengthened by the arrivals of Michael McGlinchey, Louis Fenton and Tom Doyle all from international duty.

Despite this fixture looking evenly poised, to put a victory past a Western Sydney outfit in their best form for quite some time would be ludicrous. After two weeks away, there is no denying this Wanderland crowd, in sync in song and sound, another precious victory.
