Defence…Defence

Adelaide United has the defence sorted now for the charge.

Another clean sheet for Adelaide United on a Friday night away to top of the table Western Sydney Wanderers and all is good with the REDS again.  Usually a nil all draw doesn’t scream gripping, entertaining or positivity but this was certainly another small step forward in the ship turning around at Adelaide United and sailing towards finals football.

It was a game of course filled with controversial referring decisions and probably Ben Williams the referee is the main reason it ended goaless rather than the 22 men on the park. However hats off to Ben for admitting he should have given two penalties in the first half one for a foul on Adelaide’s Michael Marrone and one to Wanderers forward Mark Bridge.

I guess the funny irony is Ben Williams is one of three full time referees in the A-League to help prevent blatant bad decisions that warrant an apology to fans after games…Oops!

But let’s focus on the Reds, we have not had our colours lowered in 5 games now taking 11 points out of a possible 15 and just a point or two away from the top six.

Jordan Elsey was man of the match against the Wanderers and is a breath of fresh air to Reds fans, a player who has stepped up and taken his opportunity as an important central defender sitting next to our other rock back there Dylan Mcgowan. These two are a good young central pairing that is going to play a major part during this seasons campaign.

Michael Marrone is in career best form and has been putting in consistent match winning performances week in week out lately at fullback along with Tarek Elrich who is getting his MOJO back. He too is starting to make those long bursting runs forward from defence that we love to see causing havoc for players trying to stop him.

Galekovic in goals has been his usual impressive self and thank god he isn’t on the side lines anymore as the team is never the same without him between the posts.  The general organises the troops and does a exceptional job at it.

A good team starts with a good defence and the REDS have certainly built that now, one goal conceded in 5 games and 5 clean sheets in our last 7 games shows just how tight we are back there, creating a strikers graveyard for opposition attackers.

So now we have the foundations in place the REDS can start to build the castle again because we know we have the soldiers to defend it.
