CITY VIEWS | Don’t Believe The Hype

Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse, Melbourne City dish up yet another shambolic performance; their second in six days.

Now before you start; Yes, I know Adelaide and Perth are quality opposition but when you finish off a season like we have the fans have a right to be disgusted with their players and should be demanding answers.  We will finish the season above Victory and that should be a positive but after watching the last 180 minutes of City I no longer have the stomach for the 2015/16 season.

I left AAMI Park absolutely livid with the performance of the players last night and I cannot remember too many darker days at the club.  Sure there have been poorer performances and lesser squads but the players who wore the City shirt last night went through the motions and gave the impression they would rather be elsewhere.  Whilst that could be deemed unfair, especially to a player of the ilk of Aaron Mooy football is a team sport and I’m thrusting the blame for the lack of performance on the entire squad.

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the talents of Mooy and am mesmerised both by the fact he’s still in the league and that I have the pleasure of watching him week in, week out.  I overheard a kid say last night Aaron Mooy is like Lionel Messi, on an A-League scale you cannot dispute that fact.  When you have a player of his talent and another in the form of Golden boot in waiting Bruno Fornaroli it’s an indictment on the remainder of the squad of how low they will finish.  Essentially we will finish the season in the same position of last season and will more than likely crash and burn next week.

John Van’t Schip has lost the dressing room; the players are refusing to play for him.  You cannot give back to back performances at this crucial time of the season and say otherwise.  Many are calling for his head and although I’m still a fan of his I struggle to find a current argument for him to remain in his current position.  I could put a fine tooth comb over the entire squad but I will wait until the season is over and the wounds of the past fortnight are not so fresh but one thing is assured, season 2015/16 is dead in the water and once again Melbourne City is a laughing stock of the competition.

The Sorensen brain snap is probably a good analogy of the City season; full of talent but moments of madness have cost the team dearly.

Maybe it would’ve been better for everyone if we never reached the lofty heights of top position for that fleeting moment and mid table is a true reflection of where our squad is currently at.  We are nowhere near Adelaide or Perth at the moment and on current form Central Coast would probably give us a run for out money.  I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who left AAMI Park last night with contempt for my football club.

People often question why we cannot attract more fans, given the attractive football we play.  If they still need to ask that question show them the lack of effort on the pitch over the last six days.

Whilst technically our season isn’t over let’s not beat around the bush, we aren’t good enough to win an A-League Championship.  When you cannot win a title with Mooy and Fornaroli in your team hard decisions have to be made and I’m hoping they actually are for a change.

When you sack a marquee player midseason and don’t replace him you begin to wonder maybe the people running your club knew this group of players wouldn’t achieve success.

Anyway, bring on next year and the new hope it brings with it.  Hopefully we have a player clean out and Osama Malik is on top of that list.
