Hume Leave Their Mark-elis
A late peach of a goal from former Victory player Theo Markelis was the difference between Hume City FC and a Melbourne City Select XI.
In what is a great byproduct of the FFA Cup the two clubs met after the scheduled Hume vs. Victory game was called off after the two clubs were to meet in the final 16 of the premier domestic cup competition.
The game itself was played at a reasonable pace, with the chance to impress coaches before important games next week. There was no quarter given as players weren’t afraid to dive in for the occasional bone crunching tackle, taking advantage of a referee who seemed to have forgotten his cards at home. Which in all honesty wasn’t a bad thing given the game was played in excellent spirits.
Melbourne City controlled the midfield for the bulk of the game but were as threatening as the Australian Olympic team when entering the box. Hume were far too organised for the young City team who lacked strength and confidence when entering the box. The experience of Hume and their knowledge of playing their home park proved too much for Melbourne City in the end and the goal from Markelis was a worthy winner.
Melbourne City were well served at the back by Roun Tongyik and were able to get 90 important minutes into the legs of Argentine Fernando Brandan. A smattering of Melbourne Heart merchandise would’ve been impressed by the first half exploits of former player Jeremy Walker including the most dangerous cross of the game. Young Melbourne City striker Braedyan Crowley missed his teams best chance of the night when he tried to cut inside onto his right foot and virtually handed the Hume defence the ball. The efforts of Melbourne City were also thrwarted when experienced keeper Chris Oldfield produced the save of the night.
Hume City remain at home when they take on Melbourne Victory next Wednesday night whilst Melbourne City travels to Brisbane to face Brisbane Strikers.
It was a very pleasant midweek game with a respectable crowd in attendance. As the A-League season approaches it gives clubs such as Melbourne City the perfect opportunity to travel to the various NPL or similar grounds in the Melbourne area, and hopefully also bring a few fans with them.
Whilst there is plenty of work to be done at Melbourne City preseason form is just that, preseason form.
With the signing of Timmy Cahill and the golden boot Bruno Fornaroli being elevated to marquee status now is the right time to jump on board Melbourne City and grab a membership so you can experience the most exhilarating football in town.
Melbourne City is capable of making history this season and tonight was just another building block.
