CITY VIEWS | Away with the new strip

Melbourne City has released an away strip that doesn’t contain the historic ‘red and white stripes’ of yesteryear to reflect the Melbourne Heart element of the club.

Shock horror, anyone who didn’t see this coming is only lying to themselves.

We are not Melbourne Heart, and haven’t been for many seasons now.  People need to realise that when City Football Group took over Melbourne Heart they purchased an A-League licence and a shell of a struggling football club.  Whilst I did enjoy belonging to the Heart faithful and getting along to as many games as possible, we have to treat Heart and City as two very different entities.

If City Football Group didn’t buy out the club I think the Mariners in their current state would be a fair comparison.  Central Coast rely heavily on a community spirit and are run on a shoestring budget, and for them finishing 9th or above would be performing above expectations in the eyes of many.

I admit I did like the stripes and would’ve liked to see this continue but sadly it won’t happen.  If you like the red and white stripes grab a heavily discounted shirt from the Nike factory or the club website as I don’t think we will see it again for some time.

We are Melbourne City, not Heart and if you cannot bring yourself to supporting this idea you will struggle to truly support this team now and in the future.  You don’t have to subscribe to the Manchester or New York versions, I certainly haven’t and if anything City Football Group has turned me further against these clubs; but I do happily support Melbourne City 100%.

Now let’s address the away strip issue…

It will most likely be well received publically but the truth of the matter is It’s a horrendous strip and I’d struggle to part with $10 to purchase a new away shirt, let alone $120.  The fact Tim Cahill has been paraded in the shirt is its only selling point to me; Hell you could put Timmy in a garbage bag, slap an A-League badge on it and that version would also prove popular.

Over time this will be quickly forgotten and the focus will turn to next year’s strip of ‘City Blue’.  This latest away strip is so bad fans should already be looking forward to seeing the team striding out in City Blue next season, hopefully defending a title or two.
