RED ALL OVER | 2nd Gear

Sometimes it feels like you’re always stuck in 2nd gear when you play the Newcastle Jets at the Hunter this time of year.  A decent start though for the Champions Adelaide United a valuable away point in a tricky part of the world traditionally for the REDS to get results.

This was a game clearly defined by the fact it was round 1, both the Jets and the REDs really did struggle to show any real flow and at time struggled to get their passing game going, very much a stop, start…chuck the players on pause kind of affair.

Of course it didn’t start well for AMOR’S men when after just 16 minutes, Newcastle Jets Midfielder Wayne Brown hammered in the opening goal, a really classy strike worthy to be a match winner on any given day, but to Adelaide United’s credit this did spark the lads into gear.

The REDS were good value on 29 minutes when a mistake at the back by Newcastle allowed young Jesse Makarounas to calmly slot home into a empty net the equaliser from 18 yards out.  Great to see young Jesse open up his goal scoring account for the REDs, let’s hope there is more to come from this lad who looks like a adequate replacement for Carrusca in these early rounds. Can he kick it “Jesse he can” .

So 1 all at the break and not really a lot to sing about, Adelaide probably edged the possession and chances in the 2nd half, limiting the Jets to rare counter attacks but really a game played in the 2nd half in 2nd gear, frustrating for the fans and myself as we wished someone could just drop the clutch and accelerate the game into life.

1 all the end result and points shared, probably a fair result on reflection, positive signs though from young Garruccio showed a lot of drive at fullback, also big Sergi Guardiolo has a neat first touch and is strong on the ball, won’t be too long before he starts banging them in, hopefully at home this week against Wanderers.

Reds fans not the perfect start but not the worst start either, we dust ourselves off, take the point and head back to Hindmarsh Stadium this Friday night at our spiritual home in a grand final replay against Western Sydney Wanderers. Let’s pack it out in RED and get the RED FERRARI into 3rd gear, 4th Gear bang 3 points to the good guys! Seeya in the Stands!
