Nirwana Bali Golf Course

Located on the Indian Ocean the Nirwana Bali Golf Club in Tanah Lot is one of the world’s greatest 100 courses for very good reason, and a guilty pleasure for any golfer; no matter what the handicap.

Designed by Greg Norman, the course offers something for everyone, with a strong focus keeping the ball straight and avoiding the many bunkers on the course. Bigger hitters will find course frustrating at times with cleverly concealed water hazards, and plenty of laying up required.

The signature hole on the course is the seventh hole, a challenging par three that encompasses the Temple of Tanah Lot. Breathtaking views are provided, whilst a steady five iron is recommended to give yourself any chance at reaching the ‘dance floor’ for your chance at glory on the spectacular hole.

Long par threes and tight par fives are the order of the day, with more than a fair share of dog leg par fours thrown in for good measure. The course depicts a challenge for golfers of all standards, but those “once a year” golfers may need to remind themsleves of the picturesque views and stunning scenery to ease the frustration of numerous three putts given the very challenging greens.

Undulating fairways will test even the most seasoned of golfers at times but consistent golf will be rewarded at there is numerous out of bounds areas on every hole. Whilst there is plenty of reward for great shots on this course, it’s far better to err on the side of caution given the countless consequences that could severely effect your final scorecard.

The course presents a great challenge for every golfer, and given the location it’s a ‘must do’ for anyone making the Pan Pacific a location holiday.

BIRDIES
– Location, location, location I’m not sure if I’ve ever played a more picturesque course
– You will struggle to find a better signature hole than the seventh overlooking Tanah Lot.
– Lush fairways are beautiful gardens are your surroundings for over four hours, beats the view from the office back home.

BOGEYS
– As expected you will pay a pretty price for your round in golfing paradise, throw in club hire, balls, tees and a glove and you’ve quickly put a considerable hole in your holiday budget.
– Some of the greens play very slowly, and are patchy in a few places. At this price point fairway tees, and greens should be kept to a higher standard.

IN THE BAG
– Drink plenty of water on course, before you realise your golf shirt will be wringing in sweat.
– Caddies are mandatory so take in their advice and enjoy the experience
– There is a strict on course dress code so pack well is you are planning to play 18 holes, and throw in a few golf balls and a glove to avoid the club house prices.
– Check the weather before booking, you don’t want to have the round interrupted by a tropical storm, or quick downpour.

Remembering to play against yourself, rather than this challenging course and taking in your surroundings would be what I most take away from today’s round.

Nirwana Bali Golf Club isn’t your average golf course and your mistakes will be compounded. No matter how badly your round is heading just remember to take in the scenery and maybe the occasional great shot, just like my 120 yard approach to the 16th that only required a one foot tap in.

A wonderful golfing experience awaits if you choose the Nirwana course, and although expensive this golfing treat will be well worth the few extra hours of overtime once you return home.
