Where does Sydney go from here?
Blake Hampton shares his thoughts on the current Sydney FC off field drama
With Ian Crook’s departure 6 weeks into the competition, it goes without saying Sydney FC are in an awkward position. Crook broke down Lavicka’s foundations to build something new. The club must ask itself now if it should once again break it down, and start again.
This is a buy-product of investing in a player as opposed to a coach. Melbourne Victory has done the opposite. The demolition at Allianz was the result. Crook’s resignation has overshadowed what was a remarkable football match on Saturday night. The late nature of Victory’s comeback did not tell 5% of the story. 3-2 flattered the Sky Blues in every department.
Bosschaart’s return made up for multiple weaknesses up top and in defence. His ability to pick a pass, make an intercept and organize the back four makes him as valuable as any marquee player. ADP and Pascal aside, the inability to maintain possession or keep a solid formation was frightening. I mentioned on the night that they looked like a team that were not being coached. I repeat, one club invested in a player, the other a coach.
Whilst the timing of the resignation seemed swift, the majority of people knew that this was going to come to a head sooner or later. It just didn’t feel like a good fit. The younger guys were struggling to integrate with the bigger names and the dynamic looked like a tough one to juggle. This job needs a wiser head who can inject some confidence and get results. As Crook said, it will take a special type of person.
So who now? Where? It will be impossible to attract a coach currently working at a club. More than one manager a year doesn’t scream of stability. It will have to be someone unemployed, which in itself will raise questions as to the viability of the replacement. Craig Foster mentioned on TWG that it should be someone from Europe with experience. This candidate can work for 2-3 years whilst mentoring Corica and Kalac. Works for me.
I would of thought that this was the plan for Corica to work under Lavicka, which he did. Due to the fact Vicka’s time was cut short, Crook was promoted after Arnold chose to remain on the coast. But that is all history now. I’m sure ADP has his contacts, the word will be put out there. This gig needs the right man, and it must be found quickly, 6 weeks in. I don’t envy Tony Pignata right now. Best of luck.
