Five Question Friday – Round Nine
Who will the Socceroos be grouped with Saturday morning?
Belgium, Cameroon and Russia. My guess is as good as any but it’s hardly an inspiring group. If we manage to avoid the heavyweights we will be doing well, but being the 32nd ranked country it will be tough no matter whom we get. If we avoid Chile, Ivory Coast (Pot 2) Netherlands, and Italy (Pot 4) we will consider ourselves lucky.
Can Sydney win without Del Piero?
Yes, but only just. The #FarinaOut campaign is long gone and Sydney has secured 12 points from their last four games. The style of football hasn’t changed but the determination levels have increased dramatically. Players have made themselves more accountable and new signing Richie Garcia is leading his team from the front. The Mariners are struggling at the moment and Sydney is playing them at the right time.
We see the 1000th ALeague game being played, what has been the most memorable moment so far?
So many great memories from the first 1000 but Archie Thompson’s five goal feast just gets piped by the heroics of Brisbane Roar. The never say die attitude of Ange’s men and 2 extra time goals in four minutes took to Roar to a penalty shoot out they were never going to lose. It may have not been the best goal but Paartalu’s 120th minute equaliser was the most memorable.
Have Melbourne Heart turned the corner?
No, but they are in a better position than this time last week. Individual brilliance from Migliorini provided the club with two spectacular goals but the club still only walked away with one point. The club faces a tough month ahead including two trips to Sydney and the Victory in the derby. Aloisi will still come under pressure but the players seem to be right behind him, maybe the fans will follow suit soon.
When will Archie Thompson come good?
Although Archie hasn’t been poor this season he hasn’t set the league on fire. His place in Ange’s Socceroos squad isn’t currently under pressure but if this type of form continues he may find himself watching the games on SBS on his couch. Archie appears to be still finding his feet under new coach Kevin Muscat and this will understandably take time. Maybe a quick refresher of the offside rule could benefit one of the ALeague’s most prolific strikers.
