NPLNSW R8: White Eagles destroy sorry APIA
Bonnyrigg White Eagles hosted APIA Leichhardt on Saturday night, winning comfortably in a cold and ruthless display.
The White Eagles dictated the pace of the game early on. It was a sign of things to come for the rest of the game. Their early pressure led to an early opportunity for Robbie Younis, his shot sailing over the crossbar.
APIA slowly worked their way into the game. Blake Powell started influencing his side’s opportunities. Powell himself had an opportunity from distance, forcing a great save from Matthew Nash.
APIA tried to keep pace with the hosts, with Matthew Mayora pressing their defenders every time the White Eagles defence had the ball. But it was to no avail. The White Eagles slowly went up a gear, taking complete control of the game.
It wasn’t long after this that Bonnyrigg’s latest dominance paid off. Mitch Long made a fantastic run through the middle of the pitch. The White Eagles found themselves with a 2-on-1 advantage, with Younis supporting Long against APIA’s resilient goalkeeper Andrew Bazi. Long passed to Younis, who easily put the away to put Bonnyrigg up 1:0.
With Bonnyrigg in the lead, it didn’t take them long to double the score. A great passing move ended up with Adrian Ucchino receiving the ball at the edge of the area. Ucchino then unleashed an outswinging right foot shot which blasted into the top corner of the goal.
The rest of the first half was a matter of ‘how many will Bonnyrigg score before half time?’ APIA managed to get to half time only 2:0 down.
The second half started in much the same fashion as the first half. APIA creating some early opportunities but were unable to capitalise.
From here, Bonnyrigg went back to dominating the game. They fashioned chances constantly but unable to capitalise themselves.
But midway through the second half, Bonnyrigg’s Aaron Peterson made sure of the points for his side. An APIA defensive error provided Peterson the chance to send the ball into the net and he made no mistake.
Shortly afterward, Alex Canak finished off a brilliant passing routine to make it 4:0.
The White Eagles wrapped up the game 4:0 and coach Brian Brown was satisfied with the performance. “Another clean sheet tonight, which I think is four in a row,” Brown said. “I thought Adrian played a fantastic game tonight and scored a fantastic goal.”
Brown’s counterpart, Billy McColl was less than impressed with his side. “We gifted them the first goal, then after that Bonnyrigg gave us a lesson. We can’t be competitive unless we have 11 players on the park working as a unit and five individuals let me down tonight.”
