Group A Match Preview: Brazil v Croatia

Brazil v Croatia

Kickoff: 6am 13th June (AET)

Arena de Sao Paulo (Capacity 65,800) #BRAvCRO

200 million people will hold their collectively breath for 90 minutes of pulsating football.  The people of Brazil have endured a tough race against the clock to prepare for their month on the World sporting stage, but in true samba style we know it will be electric.  Kickoff will not only signify the first match of the tournament, but possibly Brazil’s most important of the campaign.  Croatia represents their toughest opponent and a win will set the Selecao in the right direction, and more importantly for FIFA will remind the people of Brazil about the magic of football.

For Croatia the match provides their chance on the world stage, playing the opening match in such a tournament.  If the Croatians escape even with an honourable loss; wins over Mexico and Cameroon will see them through to progress to the second round.

Key Players

Normally we don’t look to players so young to dominate the World Cup, but Neymar is an exception to that rule.  The Barcelona star has scored 31 times in his 49 International appearances and will be looking to add to his outstanding record.   Neymar scored against Panama last week, but more importantly assisted in two other goals, showing his absolute quality in the 4-0 win.

Champions League winner Luka Modric will need to make the most of his limited opportunities against the hosts.  The attacking midfielder will be a key component if Croatia is to cause the opening upset.  The Croatian didn’t get out of second gear in the warm up match against Australia in the uninspiring win, but then again not many of his teammates did.

Prediction

Brazil will start the cup off like everyone expects with a comfortable 3-0 win against Croatia.  Look for nerves from the locals as they look to start their campaign as favourites on home soil.  Neymar will score at least one goal.
