Harbour (Janko) Views
Once again, it’s been an intense week which would sure be entertaining for the neutral but very nerve wracking for those who don the sky blue. This week, we will divide this article into a positive and negative section as there is sure to be a bit of both in a 5-4 result.
POSITIVES
Marc Janko is definitely a positive. What a back half of the season the big man is having and that certainly didn’t change on the weekend against Brisbane. The big man converted two penalties (one of which he won himself) and scored a tap in at the back post. Most impressively though is his overall presence up front, the Austrian captain is certainly not afraid to close down the opposition which allows Graham Arnold to employ an effective pressing game.
Next up is another of Graham Arnold’s recruits. Mikael Tavares is finding his way in the league, and could be Sydney Fc’s best January recruit in their history. In fact I can sum up his performance by simply saying he is a class act, but most noticeably his distribution is outstanding to the extent that he is currently keeping Terry Antonis on the bench.
Overall, the game on the weekend was possibly the best a Sydney side has played when they have possession evidenced in particular by the last goal when at 4-3, instead of shutting up shop. The sky blues put together a lovely flowing move in possession which ended up with Brosque getting on the end of a cutback on the right side to fire the ball home.
Off the pitch, Sydney Fc celebrated their ten year anniversary by hosting a lunch at Allianz Stadium. At this lunch eight players and coaches alike were inducted to the newly formed club hall of fame. This included club legends Terry Mcflynn, Steve Corica, Clint Bolton and Mark Rudan. Also inducted were former marquees Alessandro Del Piero, Dwight Yorke and Coaches Pierre Littbarksi and Vitezslav Lavicka.
NEGATIVE
Sydney just seem to love giving their supporters and coaching staff heart attacks. Having led 4-1 in the second half and looking rather comfortable, the team seemed to lose focus. Admittedly two of those goals could’ve been ruled out but concerns remain none the less. One particular concern is the declining form of Nikola Petkovic which will certainly give Graham Arnold something to think about when Jacques Faty eventually returns from injury. I don’t care what level you are playing at, conceding 4 goals isn’t good enough.
Overall however as a club, the sky blues continue to rise up the table in quite spectacular fashion. Sydney Fc next play Brisbane Roar’s rivals for 6th position in Melbourne City on Friday night.
Editors Note: Let’s hope we see a far bigger negative section after next Friday nights game, C’mon City – Hardsy
