City Views – Players on the Melbourne City radar

With speculation growing Danish Goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen will join Melbourne City on a two year contract we thought we’d take a look at some other potential City signings before the 2015/16 A-League season commences.

Ronaldo (Born 18th September 1976)

Although the Brazilian great is now retired he could be the answer for the goal scoring solution at the club. Ronaldo scored an incredible 62 goals in 98 appearances for Brazil and was part of the 1994 and 2002 World Cup winning squads. Ronaldo scored three goals in the 1997 Confederations Cup final against the Socceroos.

Ruud van Nistelrooy (Born 1st July 1976)

Just being Dutch would give the former great an advantage with John Van’t Schip at the helm. Ruud would give City another avenue to goal as a proven goal scorer and given his days at Manchester United he would be the perfect solution to the ‘green seat elite’ dilemma at the club. A short term contract might be perfect for Van Nistelrooy given his role as assistant manager with the Netherlands.

Andriy Shevchenko (Born 29th September 1976)

Another goal scoring option for the club, Shevchenko would add presence when taking set pieces. Shevchenko has only been retired for three years but given the current political climate in the Ukraine Shevchenko may not want to move at this current time.

Michael Ballack (Born 26th September 1976)

Strongly linked with Western Sydney Wanderers in their first season Ballack would be an ideal midfield option. The German veteran gives yet another option in front of goal but would help take the load off current marquee Robert Koren. Ballack would be another footballer to be enticed out of retirement but the strong lure of the A-League could give City an advantage when pursuing the midfielder.

Thomas Sorensen (Born 12th June 1976)

In all seriousness Thomas Sorensen will be a great signing for the club. Melbourne City haven’t found an elite keeper since Clint Bolton hung up the gloves and although Tando Velaphi hasn’t put a foot wrong during his time at the club he isn’t the number one keeper that could win an A-League title.

Sorensen’s previous clubs include Sunderland, Aston Villa and Stoke City. Sorensen made 101 appearances for Denmark before retiring in August 2012.
