Why We Love The FFA Cup
As I watched Adelaide United win another FFA cup game I stopped to think of this competition, of course with rose coloured glasses; but how good is the FFA CUP??
‘The magic of the cup’ a term which gets loosely thrown around is however really magic, a competition unique to our great game and in time to be the envy of all other sports in Australia. I mean what other sport can truly embrace all grass roots clubs and have them compete with the elite clubs the sport has to offer, the answer is none.
The FFA cup is what we love as Australians, the phrases Jack is as good as his master and getting a fair go as well as our love for the Underdog all go hand in hand with this competition, I mean who can forget Adelaide City a South Australian state league side knocking out Western Sydney Wanderers last year and at the time the current Asian club champions….I’m sorry but Jack was truly as good as his master on that day. In one word MAGIC.
With the recent rise in reality television on free to air television, how good was it to shout out in prime time Go Bentley Greens!! A amateur side from Victoria before their Semi Final clash with A-League side Perth Glory ,you know the competition has entrenched itself into the Australian general public. So even though you might not follow the game you get the gravity and romance behind it. You see as Aussies we all love the underdog, and any Aussie will tap into that.
This is a magic competition which I believe in time will rival any other competition in not only our game but all sports in Australia.
A competition that not only showcases the best players we have to offer, but showcases the next potential superstar and average Joe who just plays the game with his mates and on his one day can be a hero along with his fellow team.
Who also doesn’t love seeing local suburban grounds packed with thousand of local punters watching their team take on the big boys. As a fan you can’t help but enjoy watching clubs you may have played for in the past or even played against as a kid taking on the likes of Adelaide United, Sydney FC or a Melbourne Victory, the connection is instant.
I could talk more about the great food; Yiros, souvlakis, chips, hamburgers you get served up by the countless volunteers at these suburban grounds, but that would then just be showing off, you have to get out there and experience that magic for yourself.
So as Adelaide United continues its FFA Cup run this year I will cheer on loudly from the stands but of course cheer on every local state league side and wish them all the success as they get to enjoy the magic of the cup and take us on that romantic ride.
This is why we love the FFA Cup.

This competition should have taken off years ago but the fact that this is a chance for some of the state leagues’ youngsters to get their shot at playing in the A-League makes this tournament really special.
Glad we have it now mate, brilliant for grass roots football and high lighting our local clubs, Thanks for reading the article.
