HARBOUR VIEWS | Not Bad, Not Brilliant

So the A-League is back and it didn’t take long for the emotional rollercoaster which is supporting Sydney Fc to return. Despite coming away with a share of the points, Many fans we’re left frustrated and disappointed. In the end however a draw was a fair result and the sky blues move onto Newcastle away next week.

Match Review: Sydney Fc 1-1 Melbourne City @ Allianz Stadium.

So, here we go again… Well at least that was the feeling of most fans walking out of the ground on Saturday night. It seemed that throughout the second half it seemed that the original sky blues had chance after chance however they we’re unable to convert. As the dust settles on the game however, the result does not look to shabby at all.

The weaknesses for the sky blues I feel can be easily dealt with. The left side of the field looked very rusty in the first period which was kind of expected given Grant played at left back because Gersbach had just returned from international duty. Elsewhere, Faty didn’t have a game to remember making a crucial mistake giving away the ball which left the defence exposed eventually leading to city’s goal.

Now the positives, One word: Depth. It didn’t really hit home to the line up before the game. In my opinion the sky blues have quite possible an unmatched depth in this league. This showed up particularly through central midfielder Brandon O’Neil who played a vital role in the sole Sydney goal. This is even before Naumoff and Hoole return from international duty. Secondly the combination of Brosque, Ninkovic and Holosko. Scary thing is this can only grow but the goal showed very much this with a superb touch and pass from Brosque which set up Holosko. Ninkovic also showed some signs of brilliance. Bring on the rest of the season.

Looking ahead: Newcastle away.

So now we look ahead to Newcastle cautiously. No one expected the Jets to win in round 1 away to Wellington. Scott Millers side showed definite signs of improvement particularly defensively and will want to get their home campaign off to a good start.

For Sydney. We really can’t ask for any more than what the team showed Round 1. Arguably as mentioned above the only thing missing was the final product and some concentration particularly at the back. In terms of personal, Alex Gersbach should be fit enough to come in at left back and there is a good chance we will see Olyroos Naumoff and Hoole at some point. Add this to the first 11 which appeared against city, good luck picking the team this week.

W-League begins

Whilst the men’s team are playing up in Newcastle on Saturday evening. The W-league side are playing opening their season at Lambert Park on Sunday evening. This will be the first season under the leadership of Daniel Barrett. The Sky Blues will be reliant on star player Kyah Simon although they have recruited star goalkeeper Michelle Betos and last year’s top scorer Jasmyne Spencer from the USA.
