Simon Says

Central Coast Mariners 1-3 Sydney Fc

Well, you could make a solid argument that this game was scripted. After 60 minutes the score was 1-1 all when Graham Arnold called upon Matt Simon on the Sydney Fc bench. Only one thing is guaranteed when you call upon Matt Simon, heart. The now Sydney Fc striker has made a solid impression to Sydney fans so far, causing a lot of trouble for opposition defences and thoroughly deserved to be a star against his former club. The first goal came when marquee Holosko broke through the mariners defence and played a ball to the feet of Simon who took a touch and calmly slotted it home. The second a precise header which was almost in slow motion which completed the 3-1 result.

Perhaps just as important was the fact that fellow Sydney Fc striker Shane Smeltz was able to score a goal which was comfortably slotted home after a composed assist from captain Alex Brosque. The game however wasn’t without its hiccups. Most worryingly for the first time in a few matches, our defence was exposed. First came a goal not long after Sydney scored our first when O’Donovan finished off some good work from Fabio Ferreira who caused our defence many problems. Secondly, O’Donovan again caused the sky blue defence worry when he sprung the offside trap but was denied a certain penalty by the referee when Janjetovic brought him down.

Overall the Sky blues are still far from their best, however 10 points from possible 12 leaves us in good stead moving forward.

Match Preview: Sydney Fc vs Brisbane Roar. Friday 7:45

So now comes the first of two big tests for Sydney Fc. This week, the sky blues face perhaps a surprisingly well placed Brisbane Roar. Aloisi’s men are coming off a rather convincing 3-0 win against Adelaide United.

For us however, its a matter of making our home Allianz Stadium a fortress. It was about this point, after a derby win last season that our fortunes on home turf took a turn for the worst which cost us the premiership. However this is a new team and surely it can’t be as bad as last season? Players to watch for the opposition are Brandon Borello and Jamie Maclaren with particularly the second one changing the fortunes of the Queensland based side.

W-League

It was a much needed win for Sydney Fc in the Sydney Derby. The sky blues dominated most of the match against the Wanderers however it was thanks to two scrappy finshes from set pieces with ensured that the city was painted Sky Blues. The scorer of both goals was Leena Khamis who made a knack of getting into the right place on both occasions. The W-league squad next play Perth Glory at Lambert Park this Sunday.

Player/Players of the week

In was a case of double trouble this week for both the A-league and W-league teams. In honour of that it’s hard to go past Matt Simon and Leena Khamis for the players of the week for aforementioned reasons.
