The Double Header
So I rocked up to Hindmarsh Stadium at 1:30 on Sunday afternoon, why you ask? Adelaide United didn’t kick off till 430pm…The answer is easy, it was to watch the Lady reds play against the Newcastle Jets in the W-League clash as the pre game curtain raiser and boy I’m glad I did.
From the moment I got to the stadium it was refreshing to see so many young families in attendance, from mothers and fathers with the kids to fathers and daughters enjoying the world game together. The stadium had a beautiful feeling to it and the game was quality from start to finish. From our Lady reds Alexandra Gummer making long bursting runs forward beating defenders and whipping in crosses, to Kaitlyn Savage our keeper pulling off quality save after save and demanding her penalty area like that of Eugene Galecovic; the game had it all and more.
Tiarn Powell worked tireless upfront and was good value for her goal after 60 minutes and we were very unlucky to concede in the last 10mins of the game to share the spoils. However after further reflection Newcastle were good value for the point and the 1-1 was a fitting result. Newcastle had a few quality midfielders that buzzed about and caused headaches for the Lady Reds midfield and if it wasn’t for Adelaide’s quality back 4 and keeper Newcastle could’ve returned home with the points.
So all in all this was a high quality game and the standard on show was first class, good possession football by both teams and a lot of girls out there that had the ball on a string and beat players with silky skills and fast feet. I will definitely be attending a few more lady reds games this season and supporting our national women’s competition.
Now for the next game and the boys to hit the field but unfortunately not a lot to chat about we had a scoreless draw at home to the Jets with probably the best thing out of this was Adelaide United stopped its four game losing streak, a pretty scratchy game with limited chances and balls played sideways and backwards rather than forward. The second half was marginally better and United created the clearer of the chances but of course we couldn’t finish, a story continued to be told this year.
Our defense didn’t leak goals though and seemed to have improved and tightened up, so clearly having Eugene back has given confidence and calmness back to our defenders that we had been lacking in the last four games.
Nil all a fair result with the Jets happier to take the result away from home and Adelaide United left to scratch their heads and wonder where this first win will come from. Hopefully round eight I hear the voice in my head say.
Finally though it is 630pm and I’m leaving Hindmarsh Stadium after two games of football, not a bad way to spend a day and may it long continue, more W-League game curtain raisers thanks FFA ,it is great for our sport and thoroughly enjoyed by the fans in stands.

Might as well stick to watching Adelaide’s women; at least they play better football.
