Adelaide United 2-1 Sydney Fc

Lets get right down to business. This result was particularly disappointing but hey it also showed why we love football. The sky blues spent two-thirds of the game a man down after the inexperienced Alex Gersbach committed an inexcusable challenge just before the half hour. Despite the valiant efforts from that point on, Graham Arnold’s men failed to hold out conceding a penalty in injury time.
The match however did contain a possibly season turning moment when marquee Fillip Holosko equalised with a brilliant goal which is sure to give him quite a lot of confidence. The winger showed his class with a brilliant touch with his chest before placing the ball into the net over his right shoulder. Elsewhere, the sky blues can also take a lot of confidence at the fact they managed to push the reds to the edge without captain Alex Brosque who has been our best player this year without doubt. Also missing was Andrew Hoole who showed his value the week before.
In terms of the negatives, there wasn’t much that I haven’t mentioned previously. Yes, our striker Shane Smeltz was isolated for large periods of the game, however he was invisible at possibly the moment he was most needed to hold up the play and bring overs into the game. Elsewhere, Jacques Faty showed despite being a more than adequate central defender in the A-league. He does have a clanger in him, giving away a needless penalty of which Adelaide converted. Also, he is developing a dangerous tendency of getting caught out of position.

Preview: Wellington Phoenix vs Sydney Fc

So last week in this section, I said Sydney Fc couldn’t have a better game to consolidate the win beforehand, well I was wrong. Wellington away is always considered a tough away trip at the best of times and the sky blues will be keen to bounce back. So a great spectacle is ensured in front of hopefully a good crowd at the cake tin. In terms of team news, Andrew Hoole is set for a return whilst Alex Brosque will be close.

W-league Recap

It wasn’t all bad news for the sky blues on the weekend. The sky blue women secured a confidence building result against Perth Glory away to consolidate third position on the table. In possibly their most dominate performance of the season Kyah Simon secured a brace whilst Nicola Bolger and Jasmyne Spencer also troubled the scorers. This week they take on Brisbane Roar with the fixture been shown on Foxsports at 2pm. Sydney’s Youth league side had a bye on the weekend but will face the wanderers in their second derby of the season.

Player of the week

Going to give it this week to Sydney’s marquee man Fillip Holosko who despite being battered in the press during the week managed to put in a good performance including the goal.
