Harbour Views: The highs and lows of football
Well um, it’s been some week. A week ago at the Sydney Football Stadium, the sky blues beat the champions of Asia. It was kind of surreal given the recent form of Sydney Fc, almost too good to be true, turns out it was. Just 72 hours later, our team put in what can only be described as the most disappointing 45 minutes of the season. Not because we we’re really bad, but because the 45 minutes before was the best we had played in the league in a long time.
The Positive. Sydney Fc 2-1 Guangzhou Evergrande
This could well be the one of the most famous wins in the clubs short history. There was a special feeling walking into the ground on a Tuesday night, just a pity not a lot of fans were there to experience it. The team lived up to that feeling and put in a superb effort on the field with a complete performance on the field. The midfield controlled the game like it was doing on the run towards the end of last season apart from the stand out on the night was one of our off season recruits in Brandon O’Neil. At the back, the sky blues were committed with Matt Jurman at his desperate best in shutting down Jackson Martinez, only to be out done by Vedran Janjetovic who put in his best shift of the season. However the goal came from Dimitrijevic who scored the winning goal (about time he did something this season). Carney delivered a pass into his path which he took on the penalty spot with a first touch to set up a low shot which beat the keeper at the near post. Just quietly, we missed Carney on Saturday night who was menacing going forward.
The Negative: City Away
So if the Guangzhou result gave us momentum, it disappeared when the half time whistle was blown on Saturday night. The first half continued like the Guangzhou game, Dimitrijevic looked like his old self controlling the midfield. However the suspended took a toll eventually and if you want to be missing a defender or defenders, you don’t want to be playing Melbourne City. Bruno Fornaroli had a field day and exposed a team which is not top 6 quality in depth. In conclusion it was same old, same old and the team disappointed.
What’s Next?
So next up in the league are games against Wellington and Central Coast. These games have now become must win, if not the season is almost a write off with 3 challenging fixtures against that Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Adding to these challenges is the loss of captain Alex Brosque who is out for the rest of the regular season and a tricky trip to Pohang Steelers next Wednesday night. So time to shine Graham Arnold, the players have shown they are capable in beating the champions of Asia and desperately need a leader now. Anything less and the season is a write off.
NPL Update:
The sky blues fell short in their first NPL fixture defeated by the Mounties 2-0 at Lambert park, Next up they face Spirit Fc.
