Usain rides the bus, or at least drives a Hyundai…

He’s too old, he’s taking up a spot that we could use for a youngster, why didn’t he start playing earlier if he was so keen on becoming a professional footballer!

Sokkah Twitter already has Usain Bolt in their sights after the sporting superstar finally arrived in Australia to commence his indefinite trial on the Central Coast.

We know Usain is a supreme athlete with a passion for football, particularly Manchester United.  We know he was (and probably still is) the fastest man in the world, and we know he is one of the most charismatic athletes of our generation, so why the hate towards a man chasing another one of his sporting dreams?

Firstly, this is not a publicity stunt, if Bolt wanted another few front pages to add to his collection he would’ve based himself somewhere in Europe to peruse his dreams.  He has chosen the A-League, for many reasons, publicity is not high on that agenda.  As a football code we are flailing, trailing both the AFL and NRL for column inches and marginally in front of the ARU who continually shoot themselves in the foot.  As far as Summer sports go we are still light years behind cricket (even after countless fiascos) and probably find ourselves behind the NBL this summer given he inclusion of Andrew Bogut to the league and two free to air games each week.  If Bolt wants his name next to the local midweek golf results and weekly hockey scores he has chosen wisely.

Given the start of our season is still literally months away Bolt gives himself the perfect preparation IF he is to play this season, obviously the guy is naturally fit but it will take a different type of fitness for football.  Arriving now ensures a solid 6-8 weeks of trials after the cameras have somewhat disappeared and the hard work commences.

Some of you will be old enough to remember Michael Jordan sensationally quitting basketball to follow his baseball dream, he may not have succeeded but he was prepared to ride the team bus, roll up the sleeves and do the hard work.

Who knows, if Usain Bolt is successful in securing a deal with the Mariners Matt Simon will be required to play more than 10 minutes each week.  No does Usain Bolt playing for the Mariners really seem that absurd of an idea?
