Brisbane Roar 0-2 Sydney FC: Roar slump to third consecutive defeat
Two wonder strikes courtesy of Marc Janko and Milos Dimitrijevic were enough as Sydney FC ran away with a 2-0 win against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Friday evening.
Leading into this fixture, Sydney FC hadn’t won in Brisbane since 2007. However you wouldn’t have known as the Sky Blues very much controlled the preceding’s throughout the match.
That being said, it took till the 28th minute when marquee man Marc Janko hit a 40-yard volley which sent the opposition’s keeper scrambling back to his goal unsuccessfully. Before another wonder strike from Milos Dimitrijevic settled things in the second half.
Sydney FC came out of the blocks fast playing a high pressure game which caused the Roar to make a few early mistakes. The first of many errors came in the third minute when Janko had a shot which was cleared off the line by Matt Smith with keeper Young caught out. This was only the first of many shots from Sydney’s front line with Ibini have a point-blank shot blocked by North and Gameiro hitting a shot over the bar.
Brisbane were unsuccessful in their attempts to get forward with the only notable chances coming from Broich who very much created his own chance which he hit over the bar. Apart from that, a lapse of concentration led to Petratos forcing a sharp save from Janjetovic after a good ball from Lustica.
Second half began where the first half ended. The Sky Blues continued their dominance by pressing Brisbane hard. This is reflected by two early chances in the second half falling to Janko who attempted another spectacular volley from the penalty spot before Gameiro missed a golden opportunity when he was free at the back post. However it wasn’t all smooth sailing early on when Broich found Bratton free on the edge of the box who hit a pile driver into Ognenovski.
The game then took another turn when another Sydney player produced a wonder strike when Dimitrijevic hit a chip shot which comfortably lobbed the helpless Roar keeper. From then on the game was never really in doubt with Sydney able to keep the opposition out of the danger area until late on in the game when substitute Borrello added some much needed spark.
That’s not to say they didn’t have chances with Petratos hitting a couple of shots over the bar in the 65th and 78th minutes respectively.
In the last ten minutes the game livened up with Sydney producing a warning shot and we’re so close to scoring a third when Gameiro headed wide off an Abbas cross.
From then on Sydney clung on to the two goal lead after understandably losing abit of energy in what was the 3rd fixture in a week for the sky blues. Borello had a few chances, one from a narrow angle and one under heavy pressure from Ognenovski. This provided one positive point for the Queensland side and Borello will no doubt be challenging for the first team in the near future.
