Victory – 2011/12 In name only

August 20, 2011 was truly a momentous day for the Melbourne Victory.  Socceroos superstar Harry Kewell signed with the A-League’s biggest club, and the media and supporters were delirious with joy.

Fast forward just over 6 months and the empire that is Melbourne Victory has fallen apart.  A new front office team, sacked managers, and a dressing room politics have made the strongest club in the league the laughing stock.

The cracks at Victory have been largely papered over by the “it’s alright Harry will come soon:” crowd.  As impressive at Kewell was in the green and gold for the Socceroos, one man cannot be expected to carry a team that is devoid of tactics, and a defence that is leakier than the Titanic.

The demise of Gold Coast United has also helped keep the failure of the Victory from the back pages around the nation.  SBS and Fox panel shows have concentrated on the Palmer/Lowy saga but now before the lead up to finals, Victory beware.  Questions will be asked, but answers will not be forthcoming.  I expect the board to throw out plenty of red herrings, deflection, and little answers for their loyal fan base.

In the social media world that we live in twitter and facebook provide instant responses from experts and fans.  Here are a few I have chosen.

We couldn’t even get up for a game like this and restore even just a little bit of pride. Not surprising but so disappointing.

Failure card finally handed in by Magilton. Awful. Team in disarray. No answers.

Thank god for that – SEASON OVER – @gomvfc you have 7 months to get your shit together – we’re watching your every move

@TheRealBozza someone needed to step up and give @gomvfc a serve for their inept performances. Not good enough from a team with that lineup.

Jim Magilton declared that if he gets a new contract, he’ll make huge changes next season. Most of the squad will go or be on notice

Utter failure De Pietro and board, culture change from also rans to has beens

Melbourne Victory has some of the most passionate fans in the league, and they deserve better.  With Kewell and Thompson in the line up finals should be an absolute minimum.  It pains me to say it but as a proud Melbourne Heart member the A-league needs the Victory to play winning football.

Melbourne Victory will be in the top 4 next year, and their construction worker fluoro will be put out to pasture.  Season 8 has to be a better season for the Victory, and the disastrous season 7 will never be spoken of again.
