Football NSW Launch 2014 NPLNSW
Allianz Stadium was the chosen venue for the launch of Football NSW’s NPLNSW Men’s 1 2014 season.
Held on Saturday prior to the blockbuster Sydney Derby, the event brought together local media who also got to see some the silverware on offer for this season.
Also launched on the night were the NPLNSW Men’s 2 and Women’s 1. Football NSW displayed the trophies up for grabs this season, while the FFA Cup was also on display.
“It will be an action packed season for all our clubs, players, coaches, referees and volunteers involved with the sport,” said Football NSW CEO Eddie Moore. “We expect that there will be some very entertaining matches across all our National Premier Leagues competitions with a number of trophies up for grabs.”
The NPLNSW Men’s 1 competition is again sponsored by IGA while the Men’s 2 will be sponsored by Supa IGA.
The Men’s 1 competition kicks off this weekend in what is a huge year for football in NSW. Not only is the NPLNSW Minor Premiership and Championship up for grabs but there is also the Waratah Cup. The Waratah Cup will double as a qualification event for the inaugural FFA Cup competition.
The NPLNSW teams have spent the summer training furiously and recruiting wisely.
The front-runners for honours this season are Sydney United, Bonnyrigg White Eagles and Rockdale City Suns. Sydney United won the inaugural NPLNSW Minor Premiership and also NPL Cup last year, while Bonnyrigg took out the NPLNSW Championship. Rockdale meanwhile were runners-up in last year’s NPLNSW Final and also won the first edition of Football NSW’s Pre-Season Cup this year.
Blacktown Spartans are arguably the dark horses this season, having splashed the cash to recruit some of the league’s best players in an attempt to challenge for honours this season.
Other clubs in the league have been attempting to make their own headlines as the season approaches too.
APIA Leichhardt’s Lambert Park has had an enormous upgrade over the summer. A new playing pitch and brand new facilities has seen Lambert Park brought into the modern era.
Meanwhile, at Belmore Sportsground, Sydney Olympic has secured the services of former Greece international Sotirios Kyriakos. The 34 year old will play 2 matches in a guest stint for Olympic, aiming to use those appearances as a possible stepping-stone to securing an A-League contract.
With the A-League nearing the end of its season, make sure you go and check out the NPLNSW and support your local club.
