Melbourne Victory 4-1 Western Sydney Wanderers: Berisha, Delpierre score on debut as Wanderers slump to defeat
Melbourne Victory showed why they have been touted as early season favourites to take out the A-League title, thumping the Western Sydney Wanderers 4-1 in the first match of the season.
With coach Kevin Muscat opting to field a new-look side which boasted the likes of Mathieu Delpierre, Carl Valeri and Besart Berisha amongst the ranks, Victory outclassed last year’s runners-up, the Wanderers, as they romped towards their first three points of the season.
Debutants Delpierre and Berisha got amongst the goal-scoring act, netting one apiece while fellow striker Archie Thompson and midfielder Leigh Broxham also found the back of the net.
The Wanderers, famed for their incredible defensive stability, were without stalwarts Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Matthew Spiranovic and they looked nothing like their imperial best as a rampant Victory attack exploited their weaknesses.
