ROAR REVIEW | Mariners Hit With Double Borello
Brisbane made it two wins from two on Sunday with a 2-1 home win over Central Coast Mariners at Suncorp Stadium. Goals in each half from young attacker Brandon Borrello preserved Brisbane’s 100% record to start the new season and maintained their position at the top of the table.
The biggest take away from my perspective seeing them at home for the first time this season was the ability of Corona, whose passing range and ability on the ball is outstanding and is taking the Roar’s game to an entirely different level.
The other really encouraging sign is the continued development in the partnership in the final third between Maclaren and Borrello. Maclaren was a little quieter than last week in front of goal, but the runs he makes are extremely intelligent and it’s beginning to influence the way Borrello moves as well, with the youth team graduate the beneficiary on Sunday. It’s only two games in, but the signs are there that the duo could form an excellent understanding this season.
Despite the attacking flair going forward, there are still some issues to fix on the defensive end, with the Mariners goal coming down the left hand side after the Roar defence had seemingly switched off.
Looking ahead to the weekend and the Roar face a tough test across the Tasman on Saturday afternoon against a Wellington side which picked up the points late against Perth on Sunday evening.
While the Nix haven’t set the league alight in the opening two rounds, they’ve showed enough to suggest that this will be the toughest test of the season to date, with the likes of Krishna, Bonevacia and Sarpong all likely dangers. Defensively however they look a little light on, particularly without Andrew Durante.
On the women’s side it was a fantastic start to the season for the new looked side, with a flying start against Canberra earning the Roar a 2-1 victory over the defending champions.
Early goals from the W-League sides all time top scorer Tameka Butt and Ruth Blackburn were enough secure the points for Brisbane, with Matildas striker Michelle Heyman netting for the visitors.
In round two they face their first road game of the season, a trip to Marconi Stadium to take on Western Sydney Wanderers, a game where they will be without Matildas trio Clare Polkinghorne, Katrina Gorry and Tameka Butt.
