Sydney FC take the top spot after 2-0 win over Central Coast Mariners.

Goals from Terry Antonis, and Sasa Ognenovski as well as a miraculous penalty save from Vedran Janjetovic have given Sydney FC three straight A-league wins and the right to be the table toppers after four rounds.

Sydney FC took advantage of their early dominance in the 21st minute when a corner landed at the foot of Terry Antonis who didn’t hesitate to strike the ball from over 25 yards into the back corner of the goalpost, out of the reach of the keeper Matthew Nash.

Sydney FC only took 5 minutes to double their lead, when a deflected strike from Sasa Ognenovski landed in the back of the net. The marines had no response for the first half excellence from Sydney FC.

The second half started with the Mariners dominating possession, but Sydney’s defensive line remained strong against the Mariners pressure. A number of questionable decisions from Referee Strebre Delovski meant that both sides were tested in the second half.

The pressure of the Mariners seemed to have paid off when a penalty was awarded in the dying minutes of the match. Sydney keeper Janjetovic dived to the right to block the penalty only to dive again immediately after to gather the rebounded ball and to preserve his own clean sheet record.

The match ended with Sydney regaining its dominance on the pitch with some quality strikes as well as quality defending from both sides. However nobody could score in the second half – Sydney FC taking the points in a 2-0 win.

Sydney have now won 3 games in a row and takes the top spot in the A-league ladder, equal with Adelaide United, separated only by goal difference.
